Spa days are lovely, but between the £60 facials and the £90 massages, they are a rare treat rather than regular self-care. The good news for Newcastle: you do not need a spa membership to look after your skin and unwind properly. Here is what a facial or massage actually involves, and what it costs with an independent therapist.
Facials from £10
- Standard facial: £10. Cleanse, exfoliation and moisturise to refresh dull, tired or congested skin. A brilliant monthly reset, and at £10 it costs less than most skincare products you would buy to attempt the same at home.
- Swedish facial: £20. The upgrade. Everything in the standard facial plus 15 minutes of massage across the neck, shoulders, upper chest and face. If you hold tension in your shoulders (most of us do), this is the one. The massage element boosts circulation, which is what gives that post-facial glow.
Regular facials every four to six weeks keep skin clearer and brighter than any occasional splurge, and at these prices, regular is actually realistic.
Massage from £15
- Indian head massage: £15. A seated massage covering the scalp, neck and shoulders. Superb for tension headaches, screen-strain and stress. Fifteen pounds for the knots of a whole working week is the best value on the menu.
- Back massage: £25. Focused work on the back, shoulders and neck, where desk jobs, driving and gym sessions store their damage.
- Full body massage: £45. A proper head-to-toe unwind. Compare that with typical Newcastle spa prices and it is roughly half.
- Specific areas: message for a quote. Tight calves after running, one stubborn shoulder, whatever needs attention.
