The first 24 hours matter most
Gel is fully cured when you leave the appointment, but the bond keeps settling. For the first day, avoid long hot baths, swimming and heavy-duty cleaning. Heat and prolonged soaking are the fastest ways to cause early lifting at the edges.
The golden rule: cuticle oil, every day
If you take one thing from this article, make it this. A drop of cuticle oil rubbed into each nail daily keeps the natural nail flexible underneath the gel. Rigid, dehydrated nails flex differently to the gel on top, and that mismatch is what causes cracking and chipping. Daily oil can genuinely add a week to a set.
Gloves are not optional
Washing up liquid, cleaning sprays and hot water are gel polish's worst enemies. Wear rubber gloves for household chores. It feels like a faff for the first week and then becomes automatic, and your manicure will thank you.
Stop using your nails as tools
Opening cans, peeling stickers, scraping labels, prising open parcel tape: every one of these puts stress on the free edge where chips start. Use the pad of your finger, a key or an actual tool.
Do not pick, ever
If a corner lifts, the temptation to peel the whole nail is real. Peeling gel takes layers of your natural nail with it, which weakens the nail and makes the next set lift even faster. File carefully, if at all
If a nail catches, use a fine-grit file in one direction on the very tip only. Sawing back and forth breaks the gel seal at the edge, and once that seal opens, water gets in and lifting follows.

Whether you have gel polish or BIAB, the sweet spot for your next appointment is two to three weeks for gel polish and three to four weeks for BIAB. Leave it much longer and the grown-out area changes how the nail flexes, which leads to breaks.
